Default Leaking gear oil

I had new gears installed in September along with bearings, gasket, and GMS rear diff cover.

It leaked. So, I pulled the cover, cleaned of the gasket material, cleaned up the surfaces and used black RTV to seal the rear. Seemed to work.

It leaks. Looking at the cover, it seems like the leak is around the load bolts (or whatever they are technically called).

I need to fix this. If I back the load bolts out, put locktite or rtv on the threads, then tighten them again, does anyone think that will work?

Thanks in advance.

First of all you need to put in some friction additive in Mustang diffs...don't make the mistake of not putting it in and screwing up your gears. Second, ensure both seating surfaces are clean and free of residue, then soak the gasket in system fluid aka gear oil, then install and torque to spec. you should be good after that.

if it is comming out of the bolts, then you are making you seal wrong.

the seal itself should curve around the inside of the bolts. Since gear oil is getting out of the holes, then I believe that your seal is busted or you are not making/seating it correctly.

^agreed. Did you use a gasket as well or just the RTV sealer? When i did mine i MADE sure it didnt leak by using both gasket and sealer

That should work, or at least be worth a try. Back them out by hand so as to not pop the thrust cap, if your cover/girdle has thrust caps, off the load bolt (that is what they are called). I'd clean the exposed threads with a bit of solvent before applying the RTV and resetting them.

FRPP says to torque the load bolts to 5-10lbft, then torque the locknuts to 25-30lbft while holding the bolts.

You could also use a nice Lubelocker gasket instead...

He's got a girdled cover and says it's leaking from the load bolts, not the cover/housing match up...

The lack of friction modifier won't affect the gears, it affects the clutch packs in the differential. The gasket is not the problem with the leak considering its leaking from the load cap bolts in the center of the cover. Permatex makes a tube of thread sealer which will be farm more effective than using any type of teflon tape on those threads. Its called Permatex Thread sealer and its in a white tube should be next to all the other RTVs at the auto store.
