Angry Newbie needs help!!!!

Hi all,I just purchased a 97 4.6 auto convert really cheap...
Problem i am having is the trans is reving between gears...if i downshift it bangs right into gear but if i drive normal it it seems like it is slipping when it shifts.
Overdrive button does not work either.
The car has 160000 on it and is a vaccumm mightmare(heater has no vac...under hood has the typical cracked and burned hard vac hoses.
There is also what looks like a 02 sensor hanging from under the car(are there two?) (No check engine light on)
I have not brought it anywhere yet to get it checked out.
Is it possible any one of these things is causing it to shift weird?
The trans fluid looks really clean on the stick.
thanks in advance

For 160000 miles it just sounds like the tranny is showing its age and is probably time for a rebuild.

Sounds to me that your transmission is ready to be rebuilt or
replaced. My transmission failed on me at 66K miles and I bought
and installed a brand new transmission.

Agree with the other posts probably just time for a rebuild, seeing how it has 160K on it, the driver before you could have been one of those who decides to drive the auto like a manual and shift up through gears or just plain dogged the car. Might want to get that 02 sensor back in the exhaust though that might fix your check engine light issue right there, and go ahead with a replacement of those worn out hoses.

Yeah its prolly shot but i figured with all the computer crap that it may be something like that learning thing and the vac on the trans to intake or other stuff that may be going on

It sounds like your trans is slipping to me which means, as stated above you need a rebuild or a new one. Nothing else is gonna fix that problem.

As far as the hoses your first step would be to replace all the hoses that are cracked and dry rotted and go from there.

There are 4 o2 sensors total. 2 in the front on the manifolds and 2 in the back after the cats. If one or both of the wires in the front aren't plugged in than i don't understand how your not having problems with the car running. They monitor the a/f ratio. The rear ones just check if you have cats.

Someone could've taken the bulb out of the check engine light. So basically if your not mechanically inclined you should probably go to a shop and have it all looked at. Not saying it being a d!ck honestly.

The 02 is near the cats so maybe thats why its not throwing a code...
It doesnt slip while in the actual gear just between shifts....feels like a hesitation like the converter is building pressure or somethinng
it hesitates a quick second then catches
I havent tried to manual shift yet
i have only driven the car a maile or so since i got it
Gonna try taking it on the highway tonight and see if it gets worse or better at speed
Funny how it stays in gear and pulls hard under accelleration..
I had a tran slip years ago...felt nothing like this...that revved no matter what
oh well

Is it after or before the cats? Either way it would through a code if it wasn't plugged in. And i still think theres something internally wrong with the trans.

Drove the car for the first time last night on the highway
If im on the highway it drives fine...downshifting is good and crisp, when it shifts up its good too.
City driving,if i drive really slow like grandma it doesnt rev between gears...it changes gears good but as soon as i get on it alittle it revs between gears...the trans is not slipping once in gear just betweent gears.
If i throw it into 2nd it bangs right in and pulls the car great with no slipping.
Almost feels like a worn clutch on a manual untill it grabs if that makes any sense.
Could it be vacuumm???
like i said before i am having vac issues with the heater/ac that goes to the manifold.
I did try to use fishtank tubing to stop the leaks and i think it helped because the car runs noticely better
Once again when it catches any gear it stays in without slipping...only revs for a second between gears
