Yep, I currently have the same problem with my 1996 GT single overhead cam. It'll intermittently rev up to 2k rpm with loud humming noise for a few seconds, then die. Cranks right back up, but it's embarrassing. Wife wants a reliable ride, and so do I. I cleaned the IAC valve to save money, but that didn't fix it. Some people I spoke to thought it could be a vacuum leak, but I don't know where to start with replacing hoses. However, I do know how to replace the IAC valve. Also considering replacing the throttle position sensor while I'm in there. Not sure if it's worth the money, though.

THe humming/honking sound is as I explained here an indication that the IAC is worn to the point of failure--as it is worn, not dirty, so no amount of cleaning will fix it.

It is very rare for the TPS to fail, i.e. I would not replace it just for the sake of doing so--just throwing parts at a problem is never a good strategy...

Thanks for the advice, Cliff. I'll replace the IAC valve and save the cash on the TPS.

I replaced the IAC with a remanufactured one and it didn't fix it. I bought a brand new one and that solved the problem. Takes a 8mm socket to remove the bolts I believe. It's been about 7 years ago that I posted this.
