Default Squeaking from Engine Bay

Hello,

First post at this website although whenever I have problems I've periodically found solutions here! The search function has failed to reveal any similar issues so I was forced to start posting :P.

I've owned a 1968 Mustang 289 Coupe as a daily driver for quite awhile but decided to update to fuel injection, electronic ignition, a nice radio, etc. (even though all of those are possible in the classic, it's not cheap!), plus it's getting to that point where everything is starting to go and it's becoming too time consuming to make all the repairs so it's drivable. I bought a used 2001 Black Mustang GT Convertible 5 speed with 93,000 miles on it for $6100.

Great overall condition for the mileage. I noticed the K&N CAI on it but did not notice the BBK catless X pipe. I could not figure out why it had that old school gassy exhaust smell until I put it on jack stands. I needed a new accessory belt so while I was at it (I always seem to get a bad case of that) I bought and installed the Steeda underdrive pulley set.

Anyhow, I thought my squeaking was due to the cracked, old belt. Not the case. I then proceeded to suspect one of the idler pulleys as having gone bad but I doubt that is the case. It squeaks instantaneously on start up and the only time it goes away is when I depress the clutch pedal slightly (just enough to take up slack). It might also go away when the engine speeds up since I haven't noticed it but it might just be lost in the road noise.

Any ideas? I hate squeaking cars and this is driving me crazy.

First off welcome to the forum. with you saying that when you depress the clutch pedal it quits. to me it sounds like the TOB is going out.

my friends 97 he just got is doing the same thing, but his just starts to squeak at about 2000rpms. Belt conditioner on his new belt didn't help, i'm guessing his is a pulley but i can't tell which one.

That pressing on the clutch pedal stops the squeak means almost certain it is the TOB squeaking.

You might want to try adjusting the clutch cable via the semi-automatic built-in adjuster--read more here. It may not have any effect, but it's quick and free.
