Trying to find production specs on 96 GT
I was recently given a 1996 Mustang GT by my father in-law. I know that it is 1 of 829 that were produce with the Bright Tangerine color. I was trying to find out how many GT that were produced in that color were sold to government agencies. I found out that this car was originally sold to a local city police department in my area. I am now the third owner and I am starting to work on getting data on the production specs. I appreciate any comments and help with this information.

I don't have production numbers by color, however here's what the Red Book says about the 1996 MY (I put it in code tags to preserve the formatting):

1996 Mustang Facts
Although the SN-95 platform was carried over with minimal changes, there
were significant changes under the hood.
The 5.0l V-8 was finally retired and replaced by a 4.6l version of the Ford’s
modular V-8. The most unique feature of the modular V-8 was its chain driven
Single Overhead Camshaft Design. The 4.6l features considerably improved
porting over the old 5.0l and thus has better breathing potential. The engine
used a 65mm throttle body with an 80mm Mass Air Sensor. It was rated at
215hp @ 4400 rpm with 285 ft.lb. torque @ 3500 rpm.
Besides the SOHC cylinder heads, the engine featured four-bolt main bearing
caps for durability and a relatively square bore and stroke, 3.55x3.54 in. for
good low end torque.
Along with the new engine, the 1996 V-8 powered Mustangs got a new
transmission, the Borg-Warner T45 5-speed. The transmission, which weighs
in at 110 lbs., had a torque rating of 320 ft.lbs. And unlike the T5, the bell
housing was an integral part of the transmission casing which makes for a
more rigid structure.
The 8.8 inch rear axle was carried over from 1995 and used a 2.73:1 axle
ratio. Optional was a 3.27:1 ratio.
The GT’s suspension was carried over for 1996. In the front, 400/505 lb.in.
variable rate springs were used with a 30mm anti-sway bar. In the rear, 165-
265 lb.in. variable rate springs with a rear anti-sway bar measuring 25mm
were used. The rear bar for 1996 was 1mm larger than the one used in 1995.
The brakes on all Mustangs were upgraded to a four-wheel disc setup. The
front discs measured 10.8 in. and the rears 10.5 in. ABS was optional.
Externally, all Mustangs received a new tail lamp treatment, featuring three
vertical bars. Mustang GTs were also equipped with new “GT 4.6l” fender
emblems.
I think you're going to have a VERY hard time finding who they were sold to. You might have to know someone within Ford to get that info.
Great color though. I remember drooling over a leftover Tangerine GT at my local dealer when I bought a new Ranger in '97.

I just checked another source, the Mustang Field Guide, it has the same numbers for the models, and the same 135,620 total. Those may be Ford's published numbers?
Also worthy of note is that the difference between adding the model number and the published total is 360--FWIW the field guide says Saleen made 460 in 1996. It's still a 100 car mismatch, but maybe the model-by-model numbers include those sold to Saleen, and the total only includes those sold by Ford?
While looking in to this I found another source that said 126,483 (all models) "sold to the public"--and that 829 were Bright Tangerine.
The only reason I caught it was because the source I go to usually has car produced by color but they didn't have it listed for 96 but I caught the total produced #'s being different but each version # was the same thats when I added up the #'s. In my opinion a 96 is new enough that info should be accurate and there should be no discrepancy in any of the online sources.
Either way I would love to have a Tangerine GT almost as much as a Mystic

In any event, 360 is only 0.26% of 135,980--that's not too shabby an accuracy. It's nearly 10 times better than my best oscilloscope (a Lecroy 9354L that cost $43k new), and for that matter any DSO with 8-bit DACs.
If one thought they had $100 in change in a piggy bank, and discovered there was only $99.74 they would not be too upset...
