toothbrush/big brush, simple green, and if you want you can use one of those handheld steamers. cover anything important, eg coils, filters... any place that you think water shouldnt be, cover it.

as soon as i saw the thread title, for some reason i though of the orbit gum commercials.. dirty mouth? lol.

And once your engine is clean apply a tire shine product to all the plastics to make them look pretty. I just spray it on a pad and rub it on.

I use Black Magic engine degreaser and presser wash(spot free rinse at car wash). After everything is dry I spray it all down with CD2 engine detailer.

dont pressure wash!!!!!!!!! i learned the hard way that even a hose on jet is way to much and ended up puttin water in one of my cylinders ya not cool...so take some time away get a degreaser and a rag brush whatever and do it by hand dont take an easy way out its your car!! try to use as little water as you can dont use a nozel! and since you prolly car about your car dont use tire wet on your engine use something thats made for it tire wet looks amazing and i use it on my dd cause i dont care but it can cause some major problems and fires

I use Simple Green usually. I also use Dawn mixed down with water in a spray bottle if I'm out of SG. It works great to cut grease and grim (trick I learned as an aircraft mechanic). Lots of scrubbing and a light rinse with water. Keeping the bay clean with quick wipe downs on a regular basis is much easier than doing major cleanings every now and then. Just did my DD yesterday.

I'll second NOT applying tire shine like products. Stuff that catches fire is never good to apply under the hood. It will also collect dust faster with products smeared all over.

If there's grease on it use an engine degreaser other wise just hose it down and wash it quick. I little trick I found that works great is to spray the entire engine bay down with wd-40 after it's dry. We do this on our sleds every spring before storage and it keeps the motor looking new for years.
