Default Check Engine Light

Does the check engine light being on pull timing from the car reducing the horse power? I heard this is true and that its the real reason why you want to get Mil Eliminators.

You want them so the light will go away, so you will know if something else is wrong. Also some states emissions tests consist of checking your OBD-II for codes. Without a code they think everything is A-OK.

Totally false, the Check Engine light is only an indicator that something is wrong with the car. Now, not having the second set of O2 sensors may cause the car computer to change your A/F ratio and perhaps stealing power (don't quote me on that). Most people get the MIL eliminators to avoid getting caught with illegal exhaust at a glance or because they hate the annoying light.

I have a off road X pipe on my car with no MIL eliminators and when my light comes on I due notice my gas mileage is affected. I think when the CEL comes on it tells something is wrong with the emission system, so it runs your engine rich to avoid knocking or damage to the motor. Dont quote me on this but its my best theory on the CEL.

The CEL comes on trying to tell you your cats are working properly. You already know that though. It gets annoying to people, so they get the MILs. Another reason they get the MILs, is so they will know something else is wrong (the light coming back on).

If you have long tube headers on your car the mil wont take your engine light off you will have to get your car tuned and you have to make sure the mil are on the back o2 sensors or it wont work i think if you on have a x or h pipe the mil should work for you

Ok, My car is older (1996) so the OBD program may be less advanced, but…

I installed my off-road x-pipe and mufflers drove around for a few days. I did not intall the MIL’s. No problems. Just enjoying the new exhaust tone.

I was on my way to work and the “check engine light†illuminated. I was not concerned, as had a pretty good idea about what the computer had to say.

I had promised to take a co-worker to the Fort Lauderdale airport that day at noon (I’m in Miami) and when I stated the car up it was smokin’up the parking garage and smelled like gas.

Went to the airport and back and used like 1/4 tank of gas! That’s a bit much.

So I got home, pulled the codes.

Apparently my CATs were “underperformingâ€. I’m guessing they don’t work as well when they are leaning up against the wall in your closet?

Anyway, I took off the rear or sensors, soldered in my MIL’s and then was fine for another 2 weeks. SO MIL’S DO WORK.

By that time my SCT Xcal arrived which makes the MIL’s unnecessary.

I’m wishing I’d have just kept resetting the computer every few days with my OBD2 reader rather than splicing up my stock gear.

So will the “check-engine†light make you run rich? Yep… on my 1996 anyway!
