Default Filter in the heater blower compartment

I have this nasty odor when I run the defroster in my car. I decided to take apart the heater blower under the dash, in the footwell, on the passenger side. There is a filter element way up in there. It looks pretty filthy. Has anyone ever changed one? Can it be done without breaking a clip that is on the top of it?
Thanks,

I just found it by accident. I'm not a guru by any chance, but I do enjoy learning more about my car. I also discovered that my serpentine belt was incorrectly on. It's been a strange weekend.

It went OVER the no.9 idler pulley. It was very strange. Found it by accident because I had rubber shavings from the belt all over my engine compartment.

Your 2001 Mustang doesn't have a cabin air filter.

I understand that. I've heard it before. But, there is a filter element much like what you see in a window ac unit. Maybe many people have never seen it, but it's there. Just trying to find someone who knows something.

Cliffyk posted this on another forum:

Feel free to continue poking, prodding and screwing up your heater core.

This doesn't answer my question, though. What is it up there in that housing?
