Default Need Help Please

Please forgive me for posting in wrong area but I didn't see where I should post. I have a 02 mustang gt and everything was fine. I recently sprayed the engine with degreaser. I thought I was careful not to get it on anything that may cause a problem but now when I start my car, I get a misfire. Took it to autozone and they said I have a misfire in cylinder 1. the service engine soon was flashing when I went to them to check it out and after driving it for 15 minutes, it doesn't flash anymore but stays lit (solid display). My question is this, can it correct itself? or did i get degreaser on something that is now ruined.

Thanks a mill guys,

Jeff

Hi, welcome. On your misfire on 1# cylinder. i would remove the plug and the Cop check them for that cylinder. You probably got some water/degrease into the cylinder.

If I am looking at the plug from the front of the car with the hood up, what side and which one is it?

thanks again.

I tend to doubt you got water or degreaser in the cylinder. It is more likely you got some water or messed up the spark plug wire going to that cylinder. If your spark plug was somehow loose, then maybe water got in your cylinder, but if that was the case you probably would have already had the check engine light on. Have you changed out your spark plug wires, or are they original?

If there was a bunch of oil around a particular cylinder which is maybe why you degreased it, maybe the plug was a little loose? Then maybe you got some water in the cylinder... but that is rare I would think.

Check the plug wire, if it has any cracks or the boot on the plug is messed up, might be time for a new set... maybe a jet spray dislodged a plug wire?

The OBD2 system that's in your car will NOT clear the code on it's own. You need to manually clear it, and see if it comes back.

The cylinder would be #1-4 on the left passenger side , and #5-8 driver side on the right. #1 first plug on the left, and #5 first plug on the right. The firing order is 13726548 . And your car does not have spark plug wires, if it is a ( V8-4.6 ,GT ). It has a Coil On Plug ( COP ) sysytem. I agree you may have dislodge a connector from using the Jet spray . So again, i suggest you check #1 cylinder and the COP for that cylinder. Hope that helped.

Thanks for all your help guys, the problem corrected itself. I guess the heat caused the water or degreaser to evaporate perhaps. It did leave the service engine light on, but no misfire anymore. I had a mechanic clear the service engine light. I don't think I will ever use that degreaser again though. lol.

Glad your problem is resolved. It is ok to use degreaser, just try to be careful around your ignition parts and perhaps even just wipe those areas clean with the degreaser.
