Default Coil Replacement

Well, I did an ohm check on a 2001 Coil Pack, and the resistance on one of the points (where the connector goes) is off from the others, so I'm guessing I need to replace the coil pack.

Are there any brands that you recommend to stay away from?

Looking to save a few bucks...not sure how comparable different brands are.

Just get a Motorcraft, I wouldn't use anything else.

Thanks for the opinions.

It's odd that brand that is notorious for failing as far as coil packs, is the one that is recommended to replace the original.

I thought I'd get a different brand recommendation.

Thanks again!

Motorcraft... As for the frequency of coil packs failing, I think the data on that is a bit skewed by people who throw parts at a problem instead of actually diagnosing it. There are a bunch of perfectly good coil packs in the garbage these days. Similar to how you’re “guessing” that your coil pack is bad due to a variation in ohm readings between coil towers. There is always going to be some variation in the ohm reading between towers.

With that said, an ohm check is virtually useless unless you know the ohm spec for the part you are testing. Ohm specs can vary from part to part & manufacturer to manufacturer. An ohm test is a glorified continuity test. To truly determine the health of a circuit is to use a voltage drop test.

What were the readings you got for each coil?

Coil packs last virtually forever, the boots are the weak link in the chain. Two things, don't get them wet, and replace the boots around 50k.
All the claims of aftermarket coils are unfounded and I've even asked cliffyk about the weapon x coils and his opinion was they weren't worth it and they were no better than OEM.

Regarding guessing the coil pack being bad:

It's an educated guess, rather than a flat-out guess since I measured the ohms across the harness points, and the car hesitates in 4th gear, going above 50Mph

Primary, if I remember correctly readings:

1.9, 1.9, 1.2

Secondary all seemed fine - all about the same.

When it is replaced, if the problem is fixed, then the culprit was the coil pack.

New plugs/wires have already been installed.

We shall see once the coil pack arrives and is installed.

Actually, I'm going to have to measure it again, just to make sure... maybe it was 1.2, 1.2, and .9...

Hey, I'm over 40.
