Default driveshaft and vibration?

alright i went to a local shop yesterday b/c my car was shakin/vibrating really bad.....as i was going down the road. anyways the mechanic jacked up rear and got under my car and said ur damn driveshaft is about to fall out....so he got his wrench and tightened up the driveshaft bolts, holding in the driveshaft.....what would cause this problem? he didnt say n e thign bout the u joints.....but would it have anything to do with them?

oh by the way, i dont have all of the shaking and vibration anymore....but it would drive alot smoother after i get brakes and new rear rotor and front end aligned.
