Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

Hey guys im starting to wind down on my modding for my car with only the TB, plenum and then cams being left. I want to be able to get to 280 RWHP. Would the stage one cams allow me to do this? or would i have to jump up to the Stage 2's with springs? Do you guys think 280RWHP is attainable with cams and the mods i have listed? thanks guys:D

Have you had a dyno run before and if so, what did you put down?

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

no i havent had it dynoed at all because after i install the TB,plenum, and then cams then i'll have it dyno'ed do to that fact that the closest dynojet to me is like 4 hours away down in Memphis, tennessee. The shop is dynospeedshop

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

I think you should get the stage 2's and go on ahead and get a p&p or extrude hone. You obviously spared no expense modding it so far. With some injectors, fuel pump and dyno tuning...you could be well over your goal.

Question: Do you have to remove the heads to do valvetrain on a mustang?? I know you do on Hondas, I hated that.

Be careful with those pumps, they are notorious for burning up.

Well, if you really want VT's (which I highly recommend), call VT, ask for Scott (tell him Mitch told ya to call, he will take good care of ya), tell him what you are looking for and let him suggest your best options. He might be able to do you some custom grinds, that are tailored to your exact needs and wants.

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

yeah i want VT bar none. I want something that will help spend my car to 6000RPMS instead of falling on its face.

Hey man, where are you from? Im from West Tn, and ive had my car on the dyno at Dynospeed. Jon and Joe are really good guys. They know alot about stangs! they will do you right. Make sure you let them put an SCT tune on your baby!

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

im from Mtn home Arkansas which is in the north central part of arkansas almost on the border of missouri. I didnt know much about dynospeed at first but after looking threw some magazines i see that they tune on some of the fast mustangs in the country.

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

I emailed VT, and told them I really didnt wont to rev much over 6000rpms and didnt wont to change the springs if I really dont have to. They suggested the stage ones. I have a post over at modulardepot.com asking about sound clips on the stage 1s. They sound really good, But not as choppy as the stage twos.

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

ive thought about just going with the stage 1's and adding a nitrous kit and with the full bolt on's with those cams and 100 shot that would put me pretty close to the limit of the motor in terms of durability. How much RWHP should stage 1 cams net?

orang04gt 11-26-2005 02:19 PM

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

I think about 15 to 20. Thats the idea I had about the cams and nitrous. I have a shortblock with damaged pistons that came out of my car I was going to forge it and spray a 150 shot.

bearster18 11-26-2005 03:03 PM

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

thats cool. I just read on another board that a guy installed the stage 1's and gain 22 RWHP WITHOUT a tune. thats pretty damn good if I say so myself.

Hyper00 11-26-2005 03:38 PM

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

Wow! Without a tune, that is pretty good. Cams are pretty unpredictable like that though.

As far as Walboro pumps: I have used them in 2 different cars with minimal problems. One used to keep falling off into the tank, but no fire issues. I haven't heard of anything like that either.

metaldrummer 11-26-2005 06:25 PM

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

well the VT site claims 85 hp with the stage 2s so youd probably be seeing about closer to 40 rwhp -double the stage 1s. i would definitely get the stage 2s and skip the nitrous just on principle; your car would be so much tougher with some big bad a$$ stage 2 cams than it would be with a wimpy little baby bottle[:'(]

TheBob98GT 11-26-2005 11:45 PM

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

a stage 2 cam on a stock shortblock is not a good idea. you will only get the real benefits of it after you get way back in the rpm band. so say like like 5800-6000. and a stock 4.6 redlines at 6k. by the way if you have any stage 1 sounds clips then please send them my way cause im thinkin about goin PI and VT's stage 1 cams. thanks

Hyper00 11-27-2005 04:35 PM

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

Actually, the stg 2's make power in excess of 6500 rpm. Yes in order to rev there safely in a 2v you will need to rebuild your bottom end, but you can still see hella gains between 3k-6k rpm with just valvesprings.

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

What about some Alum Patriot heads and stage II cams?I talked to Nossy and he said that combo will give ya 80rwhp. The built heads are $1699.

RE: Should i get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 VT cams?

well im still confused about which to get im really leaning toward the stage 2's cause I have decided AGAINST using nitrous IM not suitable to handle it. i would prolly blow myself up with it lol.. I just want the car to pull to 6k but still be making power. So the stage 2's fit thta better than the stage 1's. I know i will lose low end torque with the stage 2's but thats why i have 4.30's in the rear of the car so that takes care of that.

For a stock bottom end motor, go with the Stage 1's. There is a guy on the Mustang board, I am a Moderator on that has the Stage 1's and he loves them. He has a sound clip with open long tubes...let me see if I can find it.

Here ya go. He made 274RWHP and 292RWTQ, before long tubes and UD pulleys....

Wow it sounds like it has a really bad miss, no wonder why it is taking two weeks to get it tune. J/K, I wish my Mustang would 'miss' like that.

Yeah, I LOVE it. It has the old school hot rod feel to it, when you the whole car shakes sitting at a stop light.

its time to rob a bank and get a set of stage 2 cams with P+p heads. lol with a forged bottom end

How much would a forged bottom end cost, and how much power could it hold?

A good balance reciprocating assembly is around $1500.00 or so and should hold 800 or so HP.
