Default check engine light, need help.

i was wondering if there is a way to find out why the check engine light comes on. i was running my car kinda hard the other day and the next thing i know my check engine light was on. i checked all the basics-oil, water, coolant but they were all fine. The light stayed on for about two trips and then the third time i went to take my car out it was off. i was just wondering for the future if there was a way to check why it comes on, thanks a lot-and another thing i dont have my owners manual so i couldnt look in there for help-you guys are my only hope, before i take it in. thanks a lot

well i know at least where i live if you take your car to autozone, autoparts store, they will test yoru car with the diagnostic tester and generally it will tell you why the light is on. Sometimes its free at some places and other times they might charge you.
