installing headers....
what would have to be done to install long tubes on my 2000 gt......i would like to install them myself whenever i get them....what has to be done during the install and how long does it take?
It takes a while probably about 8 hours. You need to take out the stock mid-pipe, headers. Remove the studs that are in the heads. Unbolt the EGR tube from the driver side header. Then remove the starter, unbolt the passenger motor mount jack up the motor so its pitched at an angle. Slip the header in and bolt it down. Then lower the engine back down and bolt that mount back down. Then on the drivers side remove the dipstick, unbolt the steerign arm and push it aside. Then unbolt the drivers side motor mount and jack the motor up, not too much because the header flange on the bottom will hit the floor pan. Then bolt it on. Bolt up the EGR tube also. Then re-install the steering arm. Then you need to bend the oil dipstick tube so it will snake around the headers. Then bolt that motor mount back on. Torque everything, except I couldnt torque the header bolts becuase there isnt enough clearance. Most of the bolts you will be tightening and loosening just by feel. Its very very tight, I mean like only 1 1/2 of space to put your hand in. The driver side is the worst! Then bolt up the new mid-pipe and add some 02 extension wires, and install the 02 sensors. Its probably easier to install the 02 sensors before you bolt up the mid-pipe. Thats what I did. Then your good to go. It sounds easy but you would be amazed how long it takes you to bolt on 8 bolts on each header. You could always drop the k-member but you would need a car lift, and engine hoist. and engine cradle.... Its aggravating to install them, but its not impossible.
im thinking about installing them myself with the help of a friend but im not sure if i want to go thru all of that trouble...seems like it will take a long time for a first timer...
Well I was a first timer for installing headers on a 4.6 liter. I have installed headers on my old 5.0 which were a snap compaired to these. If your mechanically inclined. Its not hard its just time consuming and aggravating at some points because the space between the heads and the strut tower are so close. there is almost no clearance for you hand to get in there to tightent the bolts. Just do it. You will feel satisfication after you start it up and hear your improvement and proud that you did it yourself.
i dont a little bit about it but im not a mechanic or anything like that....i belive i could do it but it might take a lil longer than 8 hours.....and i might need the exact step by step instructions on how to....
They give you instructions. You can also buy a haynes manual an read hold to unistall exhaust manifolds and reinstall them. You really dont even need a manual its just like taking it off anf putting it back on. Im sure you will save alot of money doign it yourself too. Just think if you payed a mechanic $75 or more, an hour to install them. Just think your gettign paid $75 an hour to install them, because thats the money your saving. I am not a mechanic either, I just work on my car as a hobby. I do everything except installing gears in the rear, damnit! I am ashamed I have to have that done. Well I dont machining shortblocks, and porting... But thats beyond my tools.
taking off the starting and unbolting the motor and jackin it up if where im not sure of....im sure ic ould take all stock exhaust and eveything off and bolt up the new headers...im just worried bout jacking up the motor and the stuff like thta!
Unbolting the stock manifolds and the h-pipe would be the easy part. To me the hard part would be with unbolting the other stuff and lifting up the engine. I dont wanna pay a shop, and I want to gain experience so maybe one day I can help someone else.
