Default clutch problem

hey guys i got a weird noise coming underneath my car. it sounds like its coming from the transmission. It's making a weird clunking noise everytime the car starts. A buddy of mine told me its the clutch and i have to change it. What do u guys think? wouldnt the check engine light come on if it was the transmission?

I agree BH..look at your engine mount and take a peek at your starter to make sure it isn't loose with out hearing it ,it's hard to pin point

when you start the car does it kind of a squawking noise? but it only lasts a few seconds? cuz if it only lasts about two seconds its your starter the gear in the starter is sticking to the flywheel. you gotta get a new starter (if the noise is what i said)</P>
