Default cutouts

I have a question for those with cutouts. When my motor is done I'm going to put the cutouts in. I have 2 questions (I think I know the answer but someone just confirm please).

1. For the most wicked sound (old school cammin' big block sound) of the cams where do you mount them?
I assume right after the headers insead of behind the "H" of my H pipe, so that way you can hear each bank hit seperately....

2. Do I need to get tuned with them open or closed?
I'm not sure if it'll through the a/f off at all if it's tuned one way and I run it the other.

I dont think you will get the exact sound you are looking for, mostly because of how small the 4.6 is compared to a big block, along with the lower compression. If you got a switch chip then you could have both tunes at the same time, one for each exhaust set up.

I have cut-outs on my car and they are right after the headers. Its sounds nothing like a mustang and does sound old school cammed car. I didnt get it tuned but it made my car slower. Its also beyond loud.

Yes, put the cutouts before the crossover in the H-pipe...as for the tune, I'm not really sure. Its not going to be good for your car to be running with the cutouts for an extended period of time, so I'm not sure if its worth getting tuned for. Its just like having two huge exhaust leaks[&:]

thanks guys. My compression will be ~11:1, so it's not really on the low side.I didn't want to have a tune for it, because I'll probably already get tuned with 4 tunes for my X cal 2. NA, 100 shot, 150 shot, and either 200 short or 150 w/ race gas. I guess while it's on the dyno I can check the a/f with the cutouts open and find which tune works best for it. I don't plan on making gobs of power with cutouts, I just though it would be cool for crusing to car shows and crap.

Personally I would put them after the mid pipe... the mid pipe is supposed to encourage scavanging by producing a slight vaccum in the system. Theoretically you gain horsepower with the midpipe being present, and loose it when it is not.

If you want to see if you like the sound, just unbolt the mufflers after the car is back together and start it up... its the same thing as having a cutout and should tell you if its the sound for you or not. To see if it makes a big difference, unbolt the H afterwards and try that out.

Now consider this....bear with me, I'm in CA.

If I have a fully legal setup, no LT's, cats, etc. And I want to have the cutouts for the track, is it illegal to have them installed? Or is it still legal to have them closed?

I really want that sound. My dad has the Cobra, and though it wont ever match that, it will sound close. I heard a termy with cutouts....damn that thing was loud.

Any problems with backpressure running cutouts?

Your going to have to consult local laws, but I am thinking your going to be fine so far as emissions testing. As long as they are closed, what can they say?

For the last, final, ultimate time... BACKPRESSURE IS A MYTH
