Default Can I nitrous?

Ok, I just bought a 98 GT a few days ago. Im not into drag racing so I don't want to change the gears and stuff like that. I want a performance car that performs in all aspects. handling, power, braking etc. I've got a little money to spend after I sold my other car, and I was thinking of adding nitrous to my car. My question is... Honestly is it safe to do this to your car and how much should it cost? Is it hard to install? or just any information you can spare.
Thanks

there are safe setups you can do, but you have to factor in mileage of the car and risks of somthing going wrong at any time

You'll be fine as long as you're reasonable with it. A 100 shot is probably the most you can safely run without stressing internals. It's going to cost 600-1000 dollars depending on your preferences.

Your mileage has nothing to do with whether or not you can safely spray.

Cool,Im a fairly capable shade tree mechanic. Is this something that is achievable with a little knowledge, some reading and good ol fashionworkor is it better left to an "expert." I know nothing about nitrous so. I do know my buddy installed one on his civic and in about 3 months he was replacing the engine. Also what brands do you guys suggest? Or what brands should I stay away from?

I am somewhat confused by your question. I am NOT trying to be a smartass or anything.

1. If you want an all around performing car, I dont think you want nitrous. As far as a good all around car, you will need power, control, handling, and style. Nitrous is really just designed for drag racing IMHO. You would be far better suited to have all around power I.E. boltons or FI. Then you can use it on the street, drag strip, and road course. Nitrous will be really for straight line performance. A powerful car w/ the other options can still be used in the twisties. Just my opinion though.

2. IF you decide on nitrous, you can INSTALL it by yourself w/ some research. Be sure to research what you want. Do that before making your purchases. There are A LOT of myths about juice and you want to cut through the BS. DO NOT believe what Uncle Waldo says or your friends HEARD from a friend of a friend. You will need a tune for a nitrous and this should be done by a pro. That will give you the best results and safest setup. Consequently, it will be the most expensive too. You should research the different types of nitrous, wet vs. dry; and the size shot you want. I did a 100 shot and was good. With a stock engine, that is as far as I would go safely. You will also want to get some safety goodies like bottle heater, window switch, fuel pressure switch, and purge. After that, you can do what you want. I would say that you would spend about 500 on the kit and a few hundred more on safety goodies. Then about 300 on a performance chip, and then dyno time and tuning time. That will add up to about 1500 approx. w/ all the bells and whistles. You can do it cheaper but, that is your choice.

In conclusion, I would say you might want to re evaluate your goals. If you want drag performance, have fun w/ the nitrous. If you are after an all around performer, you might want to put that money into other aspects of your car. Suspension, tires, and bolt ons would be my suggestion.

Good luck

Zoie da gt

First of all I do plan on changing suspension, tires etc. That is a given and that project is already underway.Maybe I wasnt completely clear. I do want power but I dont want just a car that is only usuable at the drag track. I dont want to sacrifice performance for power. Will this happen with nitrous? Im sure to some extent it will. However, when I get finished I still want a car that is capable of having fun at the track, on an old winding road, burning up the ricers and can still be comfortable taking it on a trip to the beach or the mountains. So you see the idea is to build an all-around car. I feel like nitrous is a fairly affordable way to add some HP withoutsignificantly changing the overall performance of the car.
