There is a small black vacume line coming out of the firewall under the hood where your ac freon lines go into the cab. Sounds like that line come loose from the motor. When you loose your vacume it goes straight to defrost. If that's not it it could be your selector switch or your blend door actuator.

The vacuum line is not a rubber hose where it goes thru the firewall, it is made of plastic. Ford does not sell them, neither does Napa, Discount or Auto Zone. The Ford dealer told me to just replace it with a rubber vacuum hose. You will have to remove your glove compartment to find where it connects to the valve (black cylinder shaped), it's way up there. When this vacuum line breaks or vacuum is lost from the valve the system is designed to make all the air go out of the defrosters so your windows won't fog up.

My vacuum line was broken in two so I put a rubber vacuum line connecting the two pieces. The a/c works fine again.
