Go to the website of the manufacturer of the tuner, and they'll list all that it can do. Off the top of my head, they allow you to adjust your air/fuel mixture (best left alone unless you have a wideband a/f guage), change gear ratios, eliminate speed limiter and rev limiter, adjust for different tire sizes, and advance or retard your timing. There are some other things, but the site will list them all for you.

GiJoe -

You use a tuner (or a speedcal) to accurately adjust your speedometer as a result of addingnew/different gear ratio.

This is true, but I wouldn't reccomend adjusting your air/fuel since you could do damage if you don't know what you are doing also, a place like AM will lock those out, so you won't be able to mess with those settings. It's up to the tuner what they will let you adjust. With an automatic, hands down get a tuner!!! You'll love it. With an '03 you'll be able to turn traction control, you can have a set limitor so if you have nitrous is will eliminate the need for a rev limitor like MSD. I'm tired and can't think of mechanics terms. sorry guys.

I recently got a dyno tune and chip (SCT) for my auto and they were able to adjust air/fuel, timing, shift firmness, shift RPMs etc. - but I must say the difference in perfromance was not as great as I thought it would be for a $500 package - one thing they did which was great was to set up a simple switch to allow me to change from a tune for 87 gas or 93/94 gas or just bypass the chip and run stock

I am sure many people will say a tuner is worth it for a manual and even more so for an auto but my experirence was that for the money it wasn't. I only gained like 12 WHP, for the money I could of got gears or started saving for a bigger mod. I made a run at the track with my chip bypassed and I only ran .2 slower than with the chip on and running the high octane gas tune

If you want a tuner, do what I did and get one used from the parts for sale section of the forum. You'll pay a hell of a lot less than you would for a new one. Just be smart about how you deal, not everyone is honest.
