Default Vortec Mongoose install

Just out of curiousity, I was wondering how difficult it is to install the Vortec Mongoose kit from MPH. I was thinking of getting a Kenne Bell S/C, since it looked really easy to install, but the price of the mongoose kit almost seems to good to pass up. I know you have to tap the oil pan. Is that tough? I'm a mechanic, but I've never actually had to tap anything, lol. How much harder is the Vortec install than a KB?

Thanks in advance.

Having seen both done, IMO any centrifugal is easier than a KB, with a KB you have to remove the intake manifold etc etc, with the Vortech it just mounts on a bracket, with the mongoose kit there is no intercooler to worry about eiether.

What about the oil pan though? How much of a pain in the *** is it to tap? And how hard is it to get off? I don't want to tap it while it's still on the car.

its not hard, if you have you have an aftermarket k member you can buy an mmr oilpan with a tap done already for like 200 bux. Its not hard though, I have had to do numerous drain plugs because idiots cross thread em

The instructions tell you how to tap it while on the car. Many people have done this. I have asked the same question you are right now over in the Pipes Boost and Juice section. Look there and you'll see my post on either "can I install the Vortech" or something to do with tapping. But the overall conclusion is it isn't hard at all to do. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine is what they say.

Two ideas:Practice tapping on a piece of metal of the equivilant thickness before you do it. That way, you'll be comfortable with it. Second, take the pan off and take it to a welder. Simply weld the valve in there. It's not like it might have to come out again, and the weld is garenteed to work. That would take the hassle out of tapping. Just some ideas to ponder

Definitely practice. I't not like tapping a regular piece of metal per se. You're punching it and opening it up almost like a banana. That's what gets tapped. Find some sheet metal or something in the junk yard and practice. I wish I would have.....now I'll be installing a new oil pan next spring.

Or. If you do tap it and it's decent but not great. Put some Jb weld around it. You won't get it back out but it'll work pretty well.

The KB price from MPH($6899?) is with them installing and dyno tune since you yourself cannot install the KB kit if your purchase it from MPH(KB's rule not his). If you purchase it straight from KB you may be able to install it yourself. I asked Tim about that like 4-5 days ago so I went with the Mongoose;$3900 with MPH pipe $199. Came to $4399(Didnt have to pay shipping since theyare installing)and I told him heck with it you install it[8D],so its coming out to $5099 for everything, including dyno tune. Cant wait till next week when I get the call to bring my car up there!!

Yeah, I'm really leaning towards the Vortec kit now. It's over $1000 cheaper than the KB I wanted, and I can keep my gas mileage, lol. I'm not really worried about anything but the tapping. I'll work on that, though. I tapped a hole once in school a long time ago, and haven't had to do it since, so I kinda forgot how. I'm sure it'll come back, though.

And what about an intercooler? I see the MPH kit doesn't come with one, but what if I wanted to run more boost later on and wanted an intercooler? Or an aftercooler? Or meth injection? Can someone tell me a bit about these, I'm not really that familiar with them.

Oh, it won't be for a bit. And I'm doing the install myself. I refuse to pay anyone to work on my car. Plus I like the whole satisfaction thing. The only thing I'm having someone do it port my heads for me, since I can get my buddy's shop to do it for cheap.
