Default Crate motor or rebuild?

Hey guys, its been a while, I used to have an 04 GT, but had to sell, as I went back to grad school...anyway now I'm out and thinking about getting a 1996-1998 GT or Cobra. I have another econo ride and this would just be the fun car...here is the question...I want the car to be N/A, but want more power than a stock cobra (and obviously GT) will put out with bolt-ons...should I get a cobra and have the engine machined and rebuilt (if I can find a good shop here in NC-not sure bout pwr gains from a good rebuild) or just get a crate motor and go from there? Thanks guys...good to be back!

I have an initial $15K budgeted for the car and initial mods...any more than that will have to be over time

well i was at a place here in el paso, called evolution racing, they've won national comps and they had a fully built cobra 4v s/c'd engine and tranny for $15K. but i know you can also get a carburated engine for less than ten pushing over 500 hp. not sure the kind of tranny and motor mount mods needed tho. if you're anywhere near el paso texas, i can give ya the number if you're interested in talkin to these guys.

Unfortunately i'm out in NC...Probably wouldn't want to drop a full $15K on motor and tranny...Need to buy the car as well with that money..

unless your talkin serious stuff - that is a complete rip off...

If your in NC and around charlotte, check out Harris Racing harrisracing.com, and customperformance - both in the charlotte concord area... ALSO modular madness does some sick work, and KT engines in concord is the only place that the big boys go to.

Good info banned...I live in Raleigh, but my folks live in Charlotte...So what could I expect numbers wise (pwr and $$)if I had one of those shops rebuild a '96-'98 GT or Cobra motor w/o gas or supercharger? I want it to be a dependible ride...maybe 350 or so to the wheels...that possible N/A?

well you figure the 4v s/c'd engine stock is 400 hp, so a fully built 4v s/c'd is gonna be pushin some insane power. but i still agree with you that 15k is a bit too much.

Bowdy, for 15k, i'd buy a late 90's cobra and build from the ground up. all depending on if you like that body style. but you'll be able to push some good power for 15k total.

For 15K you can buy a 98 cobra slap on some P&P heads, cams, longtubes with full exhaust and a K&N filter and be above your goal of 350 to the wheels wit some money left over to start suspension.

car- $9,000-$9,500
heads- $1400-3000 (depending on what you want)
cams- $900
exhaust- $1000

total- $12,300-$14,400
