Default Quick question about changing wheels..

So i have never changed my wheels in the driveway by hand (or changed a flat tire sadly) so i was wondering...

Im wanting to pull the chrome rims off to keep them out of the salty roads(damn snow) and put on my stock bullits.

My question is... How tight do i need to make sure i get the wheels on? When im tightning a nut do i need to get it as tight as i possibly can? Or simply securely get it on?

Thanks in advance

i dont tighten them as hard as i can. i dunno, just when you take yours off, try to imagine about what it takes to tighten the stockers to feel the same. what size are your wheels? jw, im getting those in the spring.

adam

make sure that you do this safely since you don't have any experience.

if you have 1 jack then do the rears first

jack the diff (ford says not to but, chances are you're okay)

put a block under the front tires

remove wheels

put new wheel on hub, hand tighten each lug nut - 4-5 turns (to prevent cross threading)

if you have a 4 way then run them up in a STAR PATTERN - snug them

repeate for other side

drop jack to where the wheels are barley touching the ground

tighten again a STAR PATTERN

drop and remove jack

do each front one at a time and be sure to put a block behind the rear tire...opposite the side you're working on

if you have a torque wrench then the lug nut torque specs are 100 ft/lbs

you wheels probably wont fall off, just make sure you torque/run them up in a star pattern and that the lugs are on there evenly

if you dont have a torque wrench then just put them on there really really tight - it's better to over torque then to under torque

put prob. about 75% of your power to tighten them... the torque on the lugs are only 100 if you ever torqued anything... if not just tight but not too tight... but you'd rather be tighter than not tight enough...

I would really suggest a torque wrench for this. If one lug is tighter than another you have a good chance of warping a rotor or two.

Hey thanks alot Bill.

When i bought my car the rear differential was leaking severely. It apeared someone had jacked it up incorrectly. I had a buddy (a Ford mechanic) take a look at it and he simply beat it back into shape but told me to be VERY carefull with it. It has not leaked since but i am a little weary of it.

So i was wondering.. How would jacking up one side and changing front and back and then proceeding to the other side work?

It'll be fine, your gonna wanna put a block behind the front wheels as your parking and transmission will lock your rear wheels. Look under your car, right before your rear wheels is a reinforced area that can be jacked up. I have my subs welded to that area, and thats where I jack the car up if I do use my own floor jack.
