Just go to Sears and get a Craftsman toolkit. You will want something with Standard and Metric sockets. But if you can't afford one of the kits that has both I would spend the $ on a metric tool set. Yes there is better tools but Craftsman is an excellent place to start plus if you break something you take it back and get it replaced for free.
Get a set of Craftsman SAE and metric sockets (3/8" drive) and a set of combination wrenches,SAE and metric.
That's a good place to start.Cheap tools will cause you to round off bolt heads and bust your hands. Then you start cussin' and throwin' things. Then you get busted windows and damaged paint.

If you don't have to have new stuff, check out auctions. usually they have boxes of tools for pretty cheap. Plus sometimes you can come out with really good deals. My dad bought a box of tools for like $5 and in the bottom was a set of clicker torque wrenches brand new in a plastic case.
I have a 300 piece craftsman set which is nice, also try NAPA they selltop of the linetools plus a lifetime garuntee, a lot of NAPA tools are the same as Snap-on just with their name on it and a lower cost.
i would def. buy just craftsman i used to work at sears and i have seen guy bring in 50 year old tools and replace them with brand new ones.. it is def. worth the extra money thats all i buy!
Craftsman is perfect for you. They're not the greatest, but the price is awesome and they're all lifetime guaranteed.
The big time tool companies like Snap-On, Matco and Mac are really only necessary if you turn wrenches for a living. I have mostly Snap-On, since I like the Snap-On guy that comes to our dealership more than the others, lol.
