speedometer...gears installed
I just got my gears installed, but the guy who installed them said there was a different gear in the speedometer because my car had 3.73s, so he couldnt get the speedometer calibrated. How can I get it fixed?
There are two different ways to do this. You can buy a tuner and set it up with the tuner or buy the tooth thing is not common. Most common is the turner. Xcal or diablo would do that for you.
no it came with the speed calibrater or whatever..but i cant figure out how to do it and my cruise control wont work? he said that speed calibrater wont work because there is a different gear in the speedometer because the speedometer was right with the 3.73s and it didnt have a tune or calibrater on it...so idk what to do
i had a '97 GT and i know for sure that a tuner will NOT work. and they do not make a toothed gear with enough teeth for 4.10s.
I had 4.10s myself. the tuner won't work because on the '97 the speedo signal does not go through the computer, it goes right to the instrument cluster. the largest toothed gear you can find is 23 teeth, which only corrects up to 3.55 (might be close enough if you had 3.73s).
chances are you just have to find out what calibrator you have installed and modify the dip switches to set it up for 4.10s.
EDIT: I just noticed you had a cobra and not a GT. either way both had the T45 tranny, so it should be the same. what you will need to do is pull the speed sensor off the tranny ( really easy, just 1 bolt and it slides out). and count the teeth on the gear. that will tell you what its setup as and you can then adjust your calibrator properly for your new gears.

For the cruise control, you should start by looking for a blown fuse or a disconnected cable -- do the easy stuff first! It may be a defective switch, too (another easy thing to check). I'll thumb through my shop manual to see if the troubleshooting list looks short enough to type in. If the speedo/odo are not working at all, then the cruise control module is not being given any info so it can't work. I don't know enough about the cruise system to tell you if an incorrect speed will throw it off (how does the cruise system know the speed is wrong??).
DallasMustang.com has a SpeedCal forum. They also have a calculator that will give the DIP swtich settings. As "bigmoose15" said, you need to find out the number of teeth on the VSS. Don't overtighten the VSS hold-down bolt when you re-install the VSS, either, it just needs to be snug, not as tight as the Hulk would tighten it.

My cruise was not working with my speed-cal either. My problem was that the plug was not secured going into the transmission. Also, make sure you have a very good power connection if you are using your cigarette lighter as a power source. Any interuption in the power will keep turning your cruise off. The cruise is extremely sensitive and can sense any loss of voltage. Dallas speed cal has sent me the wrong binary codes the past two times I've used them. The first time I called them and got the right code, but the second time I just kept changing them until I got it.
Basically, check your plugs and power connections as well as your code.
