I'm still confused about a couple of things with gears....if 3.73 and 4.10 gears are so much better, why didn't Ford just put them in as standard? By looking around on-line, it doesan't appear that higher ratio gears cost more than the stock gears already in the Mustang, so I don't think it was cost. If not cost, what's the major draw back that would make Ford not want them in as standard?

They had to stick with the 3.27s because of better fuel mileage.

4.10 s in a 5 speed area great i wouldnt have gone any other route... pple gave me **** when i told them i was going 4.10's with f/i they said it would be to much... i still think there could be more... you do loose some tracktion but with good tires and some u/l controll arms youll get that back. so i say go for the 4.10's

GTnate, you better have some more mods done before you post with "LS What?" in your sig.

I have 4.10s with my 5 speed....wouldn't have it any other way (unless I get 'charged and move to Germany and drive the autobahn everday).
Haha, Well i didnt mean to offend anyone with my "LS What" However even with the light mods i have on my car i have yet to meat an LS That i couldn't beat. i Mean obviously i couldnt take a Z06 or anything but the LS1 camaros and the LS2 GTOs seem to hang in there but i always beat em. And i've even beat some of the C5 vettes. Strange isn't it?

GTnateGT are you sure they were racing you and not just driving down the road. You really have no power mods.

Haha its ok I wouldnt expect anyone to believe me. Its a rather bostful statement. My friend who has a 99 Z28 thought the same thing as did my friends with the 5.7 and 6.0 GTOs, now they belive me

But anyways i am definetally going with the 4.10s. If i dont like them, witch i doubt i wont, ill go lower.

I have the stock 3.55s in mine and I probably won't go lower than 4.30's. It will make 5th work in the city. I think a lot of people are worried about highway driving, but the rpms aren't that much different.

Here is a gear calculator: Clicky

Mach1 4R70W ratios as follows
2.84
1.55
1.00
0.70 (OD)

Manual
.62 ratio, 80mph, at X.XX:1 rear gear ratio

3.55 = 2304 rpm
3.73 = 2421 rpm
4.10 = 2661 rpm
4.30 = 2791 rpm
4.56 = 2960 rpm

top speed w/ 3.55s, 5th gear @ 6798 rpm = 236 mph
top speed w/ 3.73s, 5th gear @ 6780 rpm = 224 mph
top speed w/ 4.10s, 5th gear @ 6787 rpm = 204 mph
top speed w/ 4.30s, 5th gear @ 6769 rpm = 194 mph
top speed w/ 4.56s, 5th gear @ 6771 rpm = 183 mph

Auto
.70 ratio, 80mph, at X.XX:1 rear gear ratio

3.55 = 2602 rpm
3.73 = 2733 rpm
4.10 = 3005 rpm
4.30 = 3151 rpm
4.56 = 3342 rpm

top speed w/ 3.55, @ 5789 rpm = 178 mph
top speed w/ 3.73, @ 5775 rpm = 169 mph
top speed w/ 4.10, @ 5784 rpm = 154 mph
top speed w/ 4.30, @ 5791 rpm = 147 mph
top speed w/ 4.56, @ 5765 rpm = 138 mph
