Default 97' GT Audio Problems..

I have a 97' GT conv. and am having some audio problems. I am not sure if it is the head unit or the speakers - I have gotten mixed responses from friends and professionals in my area.

In order to hear anything coming out of the speakers I have to continuously hit the volume button up - and then all of the speakers will make a loud 'pop' noise at the same time. Then the music comes out perfect without static or any interuptions. The problem is the music only comes out LOUD and when I lower the volume - the 'pop' noise comes again and the music is very, very soft.

Both the speakers and the head unit in the car are stock. Any suggestions on how I can figure out what is causing the problem?

~Steph
