Default Problems with A/F ratio.

Hey guys,

I have an 02 GT, and recently my car started acting up. My MIL indicator came on and gave the the codes for "System running lean (bank 1)" and "System running Lean (bank 2)" simultaneously. However, it seems to me the car is actually running rich, since it jumps to 2k rpm when I step on the clutch and the car can power itself down the street without me touching the gas. It's running as if I am always giving it a little gas. I have a Hyperpac that allows me to monitor numerous gauges, and the Throttle Position Sensor is not acting up (and wouldn't be the cause of the lean issues anyway). I am trying my best to learn how to fix my car up myself, but I have little experience beyond oil changes and the like. Since the indicator lit up both banks, I thought I might have a dirty mass airflow sensor, so i bought some cleaner and a t20 bit and cleaned that up, but it didn't alleviate the problem. I'm hoping it's not an O2 sensor issue, and it would be wierd that both went shot at the same time. I have a full-exhaust on my car, but I took care of the rear O2s with using MIL eliminators. Any other suggestions as to what could be causing this before I give up and have to take it in would be appreciated. I checked as much vacuum tubing as I could for leaks and came up empty; and there are no noticable problems with my wiring. Thanks.

maybe one of the MIL eliminators is bad. after 1k miles it went out and i had to get new ones. and the other solution could possible be that you have a bad 02 sensor they some times go out at about 100k miles. there pretty cheap to pick up at napa.

o ya and as far as the running lean and rich stuff. it told me it was running lean, but it seemed to run really rich. when ever my friends would drive behind me they would pass out becasue it was so rich. haha

mil's are not very reliable, iv heard plenty of stories of crapping out. my advice to you is buy a wideband a/f gauge and hook it up. that will show u whats up

Thanks for the replies!

My Hyperpac has a gauge feature that lets me actively monitor many of the inputs the car is receiving from its various sensors, including the O2 sensors and a couple for 'fuel trim.' I could probably use this to pinpoint where the problem is occurring if I knew what to look for..

no... you cant use that unfortunately(unlss you have a sniffer added to your midpipe). the only way to get an a/f reading(wideband) is to either get a controller or go to a dyno tuner.. a data logger would need the necessary hardware(o2 bung and sniffer).

If you disconnected your mil eliminators and the car ran the same, would that identify the problem?

your not in over your head at all man!!! its just for an accurate o2 reading, you either need a wideband controller and guage(go for around 250-400) or you can go to a dyno tuner and get a reading and a few pulls on the dyno.

That's not a bad idea removing the MIL eliminators and seeing what happens..
Also, I've been looking for an excuse to get over to Beyond Redline in Green Bay for a dyno...
Thanks guys, I'm going to head back outside and see if I can't figure something out.
