Default t-45/t-3650 same transmission different casting number????

hey my dad and i got into a heated debate today about what transmissions are in our cars and if they are the same. i have a 98 gt and he has a 03 gt. i told him that i have a t-45 im mine and his is the t-3650 he said i may be right but it doesn't matter anyway becasue they are the same transmission. We went on and on but i had to take his word for it because he knows everything. (i'm not just saying that becasue hes blood but because the f***in guy knows everything hes an engineer) so i gave him the benifit of a doubt. so heres where you come in. are they the same transmissions? if not whats different about them? hopefully they're not so i can put him in his place lollol

Another thing is the OD ratio's in 5th gear are a little different IIRC. Plus, the shifters are different.

Yup t45 is the first version and they revised it after the many failures and renamed it the 3650.

They aren't the same tranny. You could nit-pick and say there are close, sure they are. But they are not the same.

Engineers do not know everything.

Sorry to stop this thread on a dime, but here is the real story from a guy who has seen the guts of each and knows the guys at Tremec personally. Here goes.

The t45 is a Borg Warner transmission, designed for the Mustang by BW before Tremec bought their manual transmission division. It's roots have nothing to do with Tremec.

When Tremec bought BW the t45 was costing them so much money in warranty repairs that they immediately yanked it and put in their own 3650.

The 3650 is a ground up design from Tremec and does not share a common gene with the t45. The similarities stem from the fact that they fit the same cars and serve the same purpose, not because they had any common ancestry. A lot of our customers swap the 3650 in for the t45 because they are so similar in application, but from an engineering standpoint they are very different.

I hope this clears things up! AP
