Default How Much $$$?

Hey everyone,
I've recently aquired a very good job that pays quite a bit more then I was making before. Now that I have some extra money in my savings and an extra car for comuting instead of driving my mustang every day I'm thing of starting a project. I'm either going to completely rebuild and restore my 1996 mustang GT or find my childhood favorite car the 1977 pontiac trans am. I'm leaning towards my mustang because I'm not sure if I could ever sell it so I was wondering if anyone could price out how much it would all come to. I work at a body shop and could get a paint job and any other body work done for dirt cheap and considering its a BMW bodyshop with a painter that has 20 years experience I think I'll settle for it. But how much would everything else cost!

I'd take the motor out completely now should I stick with the 1996 4.6l engine or find a different one? Go out and find a totalled mustang with a good engine in it and rebuild it to suite.

How far should I go with the motor? Rebuild it with some good strong parts or put some heavy duty preformance parts in her?

What would I have to do with the transmission? I'd obviously have to get it rebuilt and add stronger parts but to what extent? It's a standard.

I'd have to re-due the intire interior.. Rip out the back seats because I'm 6'4" and noone sits behind me anyways. I'd probably put 2 leather bucket seats in the front but what would that run me for?

What color of paint would make the mustang shine? Its currently dark green and I'm not 100% sold on the color. It doesn't have a spoiler so it looks more like the bullet. If I had an extra 40 grand I'd being buying the bullet instead but I'd like to keep it under 20.

Any thing else you can think of would help me out! I'm not sure how many people rebuild these years of mustang but I'm really thinking about it! And I have a shop to work on it as well. I wouldn't be doing the engine work but anything I can do I would do.

Well as far as the motor/ performance goes, you should decide how much power you want to make and go from there.

For 20 grand...just buy a termi dude and forget about it. 1. Less work. and 2. You will end up having a faster car in the end.

and I'm with him...

the mustang must be payed off. so keep and buy another one. For the coin you are gonna drop getting a non-pi GT "fast"...you could have close to a 450rwhp terminator.

Agreed.
Especially since the market for Sports Cars/the economy is soo low right now you could really take advantage of low prices on a Termi.

Pretty confused there, aren't ya? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone "restoring" a non PI GT.....lol

Figure 4 to 6,000 to make it like new again....engine, tranny, a nice set of seats and including your paint discount. And it will still be slow as ***** and only worth 5 to 7 grand, tops.

Figure another 2 to 4K on a blower just to make it competitive with most cars you'll bump into. Another 2K for wheels/tires/basic suspension...

As far as color, you're gonna drive the damn thing....do you not know what YOU like?

8 to 12 grand to make your car contend with stock 350Zs, Evos and STis.....and guess what? If ya ever wreck it, your insurance company will cut ya FAT $5,000 check.

Sell the sled and buy a better foundation.

I am glad we agree that a termi is a better choice then restoring a slow and basically worthless 96, I am all for modding car, but if you have 20 grand to start with its a better choice to just buy a termi to start with.
