Timing gears on the crank
The timing chain gears that go on the crank can go 2 ways cause on one side they have a protrusion around the entire circumference.
I just want to double check how they go on before I put them on...
The part that extends, do they both face each other? Or does the extending part always face the engine?
Thanks.

Brad, I wish I could remember what mine looked like last winter.. but I had the same issue you did..
what you CAN do.. (if this is your car and it's all in front of you) is put the two gears on, and then line up the chains, if they line up correctly, they you should have them both facing the right direction
to be safe, switch them around and if I'm not mistaken, they will be off a bit, meaning that they won't line up quite right...
I'll do some picture hunting and see if I can find a good pic of the crank sprockets for you here in a second...

Yea Clint, motor is out, and I've been messing around. I'm 85% confident they go with the protruding face facing each other.
But in this configuration, running the engine for 20 seconds SHATTERED the passenger side chain guide, and smashed all my valves. See carnage below. So I wanted to triple check to super make sure...
Can you email the full size version of that last one? I'll be able to tell the configuration of at least the driver's side sprocket from that.

Well Clint knows how I take a lot of pictures, should have realized that myself and gone back to look at my 100s of disassembly pics, duh.
Looks like I was correct, still, no one has been able to explain why my guide exploded.

I'm glad you got a picture of it before you disassembled it.
Could you have had the chains marked incorrectly and them being off a tooth messed up the sprocket and dicked it up?
What got you to take the motor apart in the first place?
