80 bucks is a good price for 3k old gears, take a look at them. If he is a friend then he most likely would not screw you on propose...

Do you know this guy? That would be my first question. He's telling you that they only have 3k on them, but in all honesty they could have alot more and could be damaged. It's your decision, but you should keep saviing and just by some new ones. That's my $0.02

I don't see anything wrong with buying used gears as long as they are still in good condition, and if they have only been in the car for 3k I'd say go for it.
I recently bought some used 3.73's from WhiteFoxGT that were in Dimebags car for $70 (I think) They are in great condition no cracks, chips, bad grooves or anything. I don't know how many miles are on them but they are good for me!!! and also with me not having much money being in school and all.
I also know a bunch of people that have bought used gears and haven't had the first problem out of them.
