lol I like to think that anything that someone wants to do with their car, no matter how crazy it sounds is possible with enough time, devotion, and disposable resources. I'll keep you guys updated after I get the clutch fork in and take it for the first drive with the new tranny.

I will make sure to drop him some PMs to finish getting things squared away, however I have a bit of a problem brewing...

The clutch fork that I got worked great, and the car now starts and drives. However, it has outstayed its welcome in my friends shop and I need to bring it home. The drive will take about 45 minutes. I am worried that there may be a problem with the ECM and I am not sure if it is ok to drive the car that far...

I have heard that certain automatic cars will actually retard or otherwise tweak the timing depending upon what gear the car is in... The way that the car is now, the automatic ECM thinks that I am always in neutral.

My question to the savvy Ford tech heads is, will the engine accelerate and otherwise act the same way with the ECM thinking the car is in neutral? And, if not, is it ok to drive 45 minutes to get home or could that damage something?

Ok, I drove the car home and everything went great. The gears are very tall and it makes driving difficult. Regardless, I am not sure if there is a problem with the ECM or not, however it is apparent that there are still a few necessities that need to be addressed.

For starters the rear gears do not play nice with the new tranny! Accelerating takes forever in the later gears and it odd, like when you are playing a video game and you set the car your racing to have all top speed and no acceleration. This also leads to the car dying at stops signs. I will shift into 2nd from 3rd and the rpms will go way up, however when I attempt to make the shift into 1st... while the clutch is in and I am shifting the RPMs have time to dive down below 500 and stall the motor... All this means that new rear gears are a must! I am thinking about 4.10, or 4.30... however I am not sure if I need to modify the rear to work with the 4.30 gears. Upping the gear ratio in the back of the car should get rid of the nasty accel problem.

Next the rear end is buckling under the new found torque that has been freed from my evil torque converter. An anti wrap bar or some kind should probably be installed to keep the rear end in check.

Finally, the speedometer still doesn't work... this is because the cable for the speedometer in my car doesn't seem to match what is required for the T56. I am thinking about just shopping around for a Cobra transmission wiring harness. However, Painless Performance Products may have all of the adapters and connectors that I require and end up costing less initially. Anyway, I need to adapt my speedo connector to the new transmission.

Initial prognathous: AWESOME!!! It feels so good to have a proper gear lever. No offense to you die hard automatic enthusiasts, but I would rather feel the road and the engine under my feet.

P.S. The steeda short throw has an great clean feel to the shifts. Really quick and supercar like, I highly recommend it.

Now i have a question about my car. its not a mustang but has pretty much the same setup from the engine to the rear diff. Its a 1997 mercury grand marquis. i dont know about the ECM though if its the same or not. was planning on doing the swap in 2 years and wante to know if i could before i got all the parts. Dont know what model of transmission it is but i want to put in the t-56. The pedal cluster i am very unsure about. either pm me or reply. Thanks!

Default what'd this cost?

Hey youkairyu32, do u have an estimate what this whole operation cost you? i'm in a similar situation. i got an 03 gt new off the lot with an auto (so young, so naive) and i'm sick of it now and lookin to swap to either a t-56 or TKO.

anyone else out there have any advice regarding the transmission to go with (t-56 or tko or other)?

thanks.
