summit muffler
im thinking about getting 2 summit mufflers from summit racing. anyone heard these or have any sound clips so i can get a comparison and just hear them in general? the website says they sound like flowmaster 40 series, can anyone confirm that? they are $60 shipped so u cant beat the price...
Havent actually heard the summit ones, but i do know for a fact that flowmaster lost their patent so other companies are able and are producing their design to give it the same flowmaster sound. One brand is "Flowsound" and is pretty much identical to flowmasters except they cost half as much. Whatever you get, do not get any turbo muffler. I got cherry bomb turbo's for my 5.0 and they were really quiet..unless quiet is what your going for.
Even Cherry Bomb has a chambered muffler with the 'V' that is only slightly angled more towards one side of the case.
There are different types of mufflers from Summit Racing though. There's the standard turbo style with the perforated tubes and packing (similar to the Dynomax turbo), the chambered style (similar to Flowmaster 40 series; according to their tech guys), and the race style (has two large flow tubes and resonating chambers; similar to the Pypes Race Pro).
Just FYI, Summit Racing (a trustworthy supplier that I've used for years) does NOT manufacturer parts- they simply rebox and relabel parts for a discount. However, they do stand behind every part they sell, so you can buy their line with confidence.

i dont want quiet at all. this is the one i was looking at:

will this one be louder:

The first one appears to be a straight through (like MagnaFlow) design, it will likely be louder and not as deep a tone as a chambered muffler, I.e. think "NASCAR" not "muscle car", sound.
The 21HP claim was likely on a heavily boosted f/i application, versus chambered mufflers, although on our OHC cars a straight through muffler can extend/flatten the power band at higher RPMS (5200+).
The second is a chambered muffler (like the Flowmasters), they will have a deeper tone which will be plenty loud but not as loud as the straight through design.
Conventional wisdom is that the straight through mufflers are best when used with an X-pipe, and sound like NASCAR--and that chambered mufflers sound/work best with an H-pipe to provide a muscle car sound.
If extending the power curve right up to redline is your concern then go with an X-pipe and straight through mufflers, if OTH you are more concerned about how it sounds go with an H-pipe and chambered mufflers...
