trans problem

Default trans problem

had to bring my car to a trans shop. i lost use of 3rd and 4th gear on my 5speed GT. they told me i broke the forks in the trans so now i wanna look at some options. its a bolt on GT with hopes of someday having some forced induction, i do go to the track occasionally.

should i just be repairing the damage done? is there something i should have them do/replace while they are in there anyway? would it be better to just swap the trans completely? can it be rebuilt better? i know nothing about tranny's but i know if they need to take it out anyway, i want everything done right!

also, would it be a good idea to have the clutch changed while they are at it as well, or does it not really matter while they r doing trans work? i was planning on doin a racing clutch prolly in this coming may but if it could save me a few bucks to have it all done at once ill do it. thanks!

I'd call promotion and talk to them about a rebuilt kit for the tranny to make it a PMP750 that holds 750hp and just have your tranny shop do the rebuild. I think it upgrades the syncro's, shift forks, and maybe the gears are treated as well or something for added strength. And while youre in there, get a 26 spline input shaft so you dont have to worry about snapping that with a more competition oriented clutch. It would be a good idea for you to get the clutch swapped while youre in there...save you extra labor to pull the tranny back out and stuff. You should really take a look at Centerforce's DFX clutch if you are looking for a good street/track clutch. The regular DF holds like 600lb torque and the DFX is stronger than that. So just some food for thought. But i think that the DF would meet your needs very well if youre gonna be running around with just f/i(no built motor yet).

If you want something a little closer to "bulletproof" that can put up with just about whatever you do to it then look into a TKO 500 or 600 trans. I read somewhere that the TR-3650 is only rated at 360 ft/lbs (it can take more than that, but for how long?), so if you already are or are planning on big power in the near future then I'd look into a stronger gearbox. T-56's are supposed to be reasonably tough, too. And yeah, it'll be a little cheaper in the long run to do a clutch now while everything's already out of the car. Don't forget about beefing up the rearend, either. That will probably break before a trans does.

TKO's are no good. Ask lizzyfan. He recommends going with other options like a t56. But rebuilding the t3650 with good parts makes them a lot better. Which is why i suggested a built rebuild kit from Promotion.

theres the link to their transmission page. You can get the PMP750 tranny for $1650 so not bad for something thats gonna hold 750hp. And i think they might have a rebuild kit of everything that they have in that transmission that you can have yours rebuilt yourself.

good info teej, thnx...ill check out that site for maybe a rebuild kit, prolly cheaper than the whole thing. although 750 hp seems a lil excessive lol...how stiff are the centerforces clutches ur talking about?

and my rear is alrdy fully built =]

I dont know if that is the PMP750 upgrade kit though. Id call about that. But the centerforce DF clutch that was in my friend's car, id say was pretty not stiff. lol not exactly what you'd think a performance clutch would feel like but it was a very nice clutch effort from what i remember. Its been about a year since he had that car though. But he always said he compared it to his honda's clutch...and the DFX is probably gonna be stiffer but definitely streetable, but may be more primitive compared to the DF. Id get the DF if you were gonna go with a centerforce clutch with the mods you have now and have planned for near future.

WOW compared to a honda, thats insane. ive driven stick hondas before, its like the clutch isnt even there, lol, ill have to look into that centerforce clutch. i always hear everyone talk about spec like its the only one to get, but i know centerforce has the best pressure plate. thanks again
