Hey I have a 97 Gt on stock rims. I bought it and the guy had 225/55/17 on them. I thought it seemed a little narrow to 225's on.. can anyone help me out? I need to replace the tires and need to know what size.

 

Seems to me there is a tire guide around here somewhere....????



A 225 is going to be good for a 7" wheel, but a bit think on an 8" wheel. What width of wheel are you running?

I have no idea. I just got it.. on stock 17's if you know how wide they are.. i am not sure.

 

Looks like from your avatar pic you have the stock 17x8 machined finish rims, 245/45 should be the correct tire size for those.

 

i think the OE tire on your car was 245/45-17. if you have a 17x8 wheel, then you can run up to a 275/40-17, which is what i'm running on my stock 17x8's. you can easily just stick a tape measure inside your wheel and tell if it's a 17x7 or 17x8 though.

 

Please DON'T run a 275 on an 8" wheel

This is a poor fit and will lead to improper tire wear and sloppy handling in the corners. The '97 GT came with both a 7" wheel and an 8" wheel, so some can you give us a pic of the profile of the wheel as well as from directly behind.

As Z28KLR has suggested, a 245 is the proper fit for an 8" wheel and sounds like what you have based on your description.

would you recommend a 9" or 10" wheel for a 275 tire? i got the 275s because i had plans to get some 17x9 black bullitts soon afterwards, but unexpected expenses got in the way and i've had the 275s on the 8" wheels for about 4 years now. haven't had any problems with uneven/improper tire wear, and i don't really do any road course driving so they've worked out ok i guess.

 

yes many people, including myself, have been running 275s on 8" wheels for a long time with 0 problems. This guy has just always been on a mission to try and prevent people from doing it.

 

Like there's no reason for it.

 

Its not a question of if it should be done...but if it can be done. It can be done, but there is a higher chance that something would happen due to the sidewalls bulging than on the tire that is the proper fit.
