Default 4.6 limitations

hey guys, I'm wandering over here from the 5.0 section. I'm going to a friend of mines house later to help him tinker with his 2000 gt. My question is, what is the RPM band for a 4.6, I know they are a high rev moter but what is a good shifting point a drag race on a basically stock motor with what I think is 4:10 gears? Can I just get real quick run down on the differences on racing a fox to a new edge? He is somewhat inexperienced and hasnt really ran his car to its potential yet. We're going to the strip tomorrow and want to help him out to make sure he's gettin the most out of his car. Thanks guys.

On basically a stock motor, I would shift around 5500 rpms.

stock motor i would not shift any higher than 5500rpm. if he can powershift without lifting, shifting at 5200-5400rpm would be ideal. its not really that high revving of a motor...now a 4v is but not a 2v. They can be but stock they arent that great.

yea i didnt know if he had the 2v or 4v, apparently 2 tho lol. To me is still high rev compared to my stock 5.0's shifting around 4500-4600. Powershifting like that is out of the question for him, he's only been driving 5 spd for like 9 months and has really experimented past granny shifting then accelerating fast. I'm going to work with him today, hoping this rain holds off for another 4 hours or so, but it dont look like it will. I have an 1/8th mile measured out roughly around where he lives and if it keeps dry i'm going to see how well he can do, as far as MPH goes. I also forgot to mention his car has and all around lower, I'm wanting to say 2 inch or a little more. He has the stock GT wheels and tire size and the tire sits flush with the fender wells. As low as it can go, looks great, but being as to how the car hasn't had anything done the the suspension other than the lowering spring it breaks em loose pretty easy.

For future reference

GT/Bullit = 2valve.
Cobra/Mach= 4 valve.

Thanks, I figured it was year specific. is there any difference motor wise in the 2v's through the years or did they basically stay the same? and I know this is off topic from my thread kinda but my friend is also looking to get cams for his car, it would do nothing on the stock motor right? He needs to get good heads and intake as well? Would there be a nice power increase with just the heads and cams, I only ask because a few days ago I found a great deal for him on what was labled as PI heads and Cams, used of course for $350. They unfortunately sold though.

the PI (performance improved) were factory heads that flow better than earlier heads. Someone will chime in but i believe it was 2000 or 2001 when the PI heads became stock.

If you are looking for a pretty sizeable increase in power and rpm range, look into aftermarket heads, intake, and set of cams. That setup will push the budget a bit though, and also push the rpm limits of the stock bottom end.

They started with the 99 model.

96-98 Gts had different heads, intake and cams, but his car already has pi heads, intake and cams if its a 2000Gt. A good set of cams and a tune will work just fine on a stock intake/headed car. For the most part the stock intake isn't a limiting factor till you start making big power.
