Default rear axle lubricant was low from the factory.

I just got this car and checked the rear fluid, and it was low. I thought that Ford paid the dealership to check this stuff out before the car was presented to the buyer. It was evident from the plugs that nothing was checked. The manual trans fluid checked ok. It wasn't so low as to cause damage, only 10 oz, but I thought everyone might want to know if you haven't checked, it might be a good idea.

The correct fill on many manual transmissions is a fraction of an inch BELOW the bottom of the fill plug opening. I would not be surprised if the spec on those specify as much as 7/16" below. I would not start raising cane with anyone until you consult a service manual.

+1 your trans and rearend are now overfilled and I hope you put ATF in the transmission also.

Default Guys, reread my post

I did not put any fluid in the trans, it was ok, 1/2 inch below the plug. I said the manual trans fluid checked ok. As far as the rear goes, Ford told me it needs to be filled to the top. It's essentially the same 8.8 rearend they've used since 1986. Please show me a service manual that says to fill the rear below the plug level and I'll go back to Ford and tell them they are wrong.

Here you go, 8.8 Specs straight from the factory service manual:

In-vehicle repair refill capacities are determined by filling the rear axle with the specified lubricant to 25.4-28.6 mm (1.0-1.125 in) below the bottom of the fill hole with the axle at ride height.

Unfortunately this forum's overly strict rules won't let me post the pdf.

Thanks for the info. It won't take much to take a little bit out. Thanks again.
