Power increase with 99 octane and tune
I just got the car tuned,my baselinewas a KN CAI and 93 octane fuel in the tank, it ran 270 BHP. When tuned for 93 fuel with XCAL2 it made another 9BHP (279 & 299 RWTQ). The second run was 10C hotter ambient. I was just wondering, what gain could be made with 99 octane fuel in the tank and appropriate timing advance, 99 octane is premium unleaded in the UK, 95 is the standard.

Well, I'm not in the UK yet so will have to wait a while lol, I got the tuning done in the US yesterday. I wondered if anyone had bought race fuel at 99 RON and had a tune done?, or if a 'rule of thumb' exists that says you will get another 10 BHP etc for the 99 rating. If anyone knows where to buy race fuel in Il I'm tempted to do the 'experiment' myself.

Before you get too excited, I vaguely remember something about Euro octaine being figured at a different rate than US. I don't remember where I saw it or even if I am remembering right (and there's another thought tagging along with it that has something to do with deisel)... So I could be completely cracked on this, but I would hate to see someone loose an engine over it.
AS far as tuning for more octaine goes tho, the higher the octaine, the more timing a motor will take... and more timing = more power. There's really not aset formula to it that I know of, but I would think another 10 to 15 or so might be in order..

I thought 10 hp or so as well, there's a fuel station near me that sells turbo blue (or something like that) which is 100 RON, I'll fill up with that and see if the car makes any more power (through timing). There's a really good explanation of octane on wickipedia, goes into detail and explains that fuel also has to 'burn' quick as well, which octane 'boosters' can slow down. Euro fuel is higher octane because the engines are smaller and tend to be higher compression to make more power - the higher compression the more knock resistance. Turbo's are much more common as well.
GTbob is right, the ocatane rating in UK are different because in hte US they show the average of the research and some other thing for octane, you know at the pump it shows (R+M)/2 well in a mustang mag i read they said in UK htey only display the research octane, so dont go ordering an american 99 octane tune to run in UK or else youll be pinging and knocking

Well i actually bought 100 octane at the pump in a 76 in orange county the other day. I just put 5 gallons and it cost me like 40 bucks. I really didnt feel a diffrence. Maybe i need to retune to a higher octane to see the results. I have a 91 oct. tune.
