OK take this as the gospel. you should use a inexpensive oil for the install to allow a good break in. after 500-1000 kms so um 300-600 miles pull off the cover and strain the fluid to see what particals come out. if anything bigger then a thick hair you have issues, recheck your seating with marking compound and go from there. after that inital break in period THEN you change to RP or eqivilent high performance rear end fluid.

That's gotta be the most ridiculous thing I've heard!!!

Do you cut your oil filters apart to see whats in them too?

Regarding gear oil, a shop here in San Diego that only does gears, doesn't recommend using synthethic gear oil. Here is there tech tips http://sdgearaxle.com/_wsn/page3.html

well im sorry you disagree but my good friend is a MASTER MECHANIC and owned a gear shop here where all they do is gears and rear ends and axels. this is the procedure he recomends. after doing it for 15 years you'd think it would be good to listen to him. just my cents if you dont wanna listen. your loss

Let me just ask the last couple of people that posted something... When you first bought your car, did you change your gear oil after 500 miles? Or did you just do it when you got your new gears installed?

I understand it's the first time you've had them changed.. But when you bought your car brand new did you change the fluid after 500 miles? It's not like the manufacturer asks you to and i can guarantee they install a lot more gears than anyone....

When I followed the break in they suggested I noticed how hot the differential got the first few drives, that really convinced me to change the fluid.

I went ahead and had the gear oil changed. I used a different shop than the one that installed my gears. Although the shop that installed my gears did a good job, they oil the used was not that good. They used crc. The shop changed the gear oil uses an industrial petroleum based oil. I asked if he found any metal shavings, and he didn't. He said the installer did a good job.
