Default service engine soon light

hello, i just got a 2007 gt, and the check engine light came on about 30 miles after i bought it, i took it back and had the mechanic check the trouble codes, he could not find the problem, he reset the light but it came back on after about another 30 miles, he said it could be a vaccuum leak or maybe a problem with the converters, the car has california emission, does anyone have any input on what to check or fix? the car runs great.

I'm surprised they couldn't identify the issue. You can go to any Autozone and they'll pull the code for free. Are there any mods on the car? It sounds like the previous owner reset the code and now you've inherited their problem. It could be quite a number of things. Get the code pulled and go from there.

When you say you "took it back", do you mean to a Ford dealer or some used car lot?

The lot that sold it to you will never find a problem...
They are better at hiding them.
Have the codes pulled before anyone else 'resets them'.
Then look them up and diagnose the problem yourself or
with the forums help.
Without the DTC codes, I am lost as to the problem....

Sounds like the vehicle had problems and the light was reset
then sold to you.
Now the light keeps coming back.

thank you, i went to autozone last sunday but they're not open on sunday, then i went back to the dealer (it's a small dealer, about 20 cars, not a Ford dealership) on monday and never thought to go back to autozone, i'll go back there during the week. the car has bbk headers and stainless steel exhaust, i'm not sure if it's from the factory or aftermarket, could be o2s? but i'll start with getting the codes and go from there. thank you for your help. talladega today enjoy your sundays.

the code is the key. now that you've determined that
the exhaust may have been upgraded, the check engine
light doesn't sound so serious. it may turn out that you
just need a custome tune.

It could be as simple as a loose or defective gas cap.

+1 Those crappy small "buy here/pay here" lots are famous for this type of tactic.

A list of any mods done to your car would also help. Tune, air inlet, headers etc. SC.

LT headers w/o a custom tune is beginning to sound like the culprit but let's wait for the code.

ok, i got more info, the car was a lease return from california, no mods, the exhaust is factory, they gave me a copy of the paperwork, the original window sticker, and the carfax report. they said take it to a ford dealership and have them look at it, and if it's a non warranty issue they will pay for the diagnostics. their mechanic asked a ford mechanic about the codes he pulled and the best they could figure is converter problems or a vaccuum leak somewhere, they'd have to look at it. i'm taking it to a different ford dealer. i didn't get the codes...i probably should have..but for now it's take it in on wednesday and pick it up thursday. i'll let you know what i find out. then maybe we can talk gears, it's got 3.55s, i was thinking 3.73s, i'm not much for the freeway, and it's not a drag car, i like the country roads, downshift turn brake if you have to then punch it.
