Rear End/ Tranny clunk!?
Hey guys just picked up an 06 gt wednesday! it has a 5 speed and im noticing a very subtle clunking sound when shifting into 2nd and 3rd gears... its only when driving slower speeds it seems. its almost like some sort of backlash and i want to think its mosty normal. Im a little worried just because ive had it for 3 days now. Just curious on your thoughts and if someone else has experienced this very quite subtle sound!? this could also be somewhere in the tranny or clutch but sounds mostly from behind... comments would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the world of Mustangs...the clunk is normal...a lot of it due to the 2 piece boat anchor of a driveshaft...I replaced both my GT and GT500 with Dynotech aluminum 1 piece and that made a huge difference...much more positive solid feeling to the drivetrain...

Replace the stock DS with a one piece aluminum. That should help but may not totally remedy the problem. That's what we get for buying inexpensive production line performance cars.

In that case, welcome to the world of S197's. If you haven't already, be sure to read thru the TSB's. You can find them in the 2005-2011 main forum in one of the stickies. And pay particular attention to the one regarding the water leak.

ok thats what i had figured out. i was thinking the s and #'s actually stood for something. I installed the Hurst short throw shifter in last night and the noise seems to have reduced slightly... perhaps its just me shifting faster and the drivetrain is not changing as much speed as the axle or trans........
