Default Driving with CAI air filter off

Hello, I'm a new member. I recently bought my first car, an 07 mustang GT from a kia dealer. The salesman said he would clear my K&N CAI filter for me and two weeks after I bought the car I noticed the filter wasn't attached to the piping. It was completely detached but sorta held in place by the heat shield and the body. I went under the hood earlier, and either I didn't notice it at first or it came loose sometime later. Also, it being my first car, I've been driving it hard (having to fuel up every 4 days and getting less than 14 mpg lol). So I cleaned the MAF sensor after watching a tutorial video and I'm planning to clean the throttle body sometime soon. Is there anything else that I need to clean/look out for? I'm not mechanically inclined so bear with me if I ask stupid questions, and please give dumbed down explanations.

On a related note, I noticed a few abrasions on the filter. Nothing major but when I give 'er, I hear a whistle as the engine draws air. Do cars with CAI make a whistle when you step on the gas?

Having the filter off isn't good, but don't fret over it. I've seen it happen quite a bit.

More of a whistling sound is normal.

Definitely reattach the filter and your mpg will likely go up. Some CAIs whistle.

I'm surprised you didn't throw a code for the detached intake. A mismatch like that will usually throw one or more. Oh, wait. I just reread your post. If the filter ws detached at the heat shield, then no mismatch would have been seen. I thought you meant it was detached at the TB.

Have you ever removed an airbox and started the engine with it sucking straight into the throttle body? And then rev it up?

It's SO loud

I'll have to give it a try when I get to cleaning the throttle body. Mine has an xpipe and Mac axlebacks so I can't imagine it being any louder!

Please don't do any revving with your MAF sensor detached.

When I was young(er), I'd remove the air filter on my father's big block Pontiac. It sounded awesome, despite sucking garbage into the carb.
