Coil location
#5
I have not had this issue with the Mustang. But my sister's escort had a bad plug and the PCM diagnosed which one it was. Also, my friend had a Trailblazer and his #6 coil was bad. PCM also specifically called that out. So yes, PCMs can diagnose which coil is bad. As for the a-d definition that you have, I have no clue. Sorry about that.

Yep the PCM can, not sure on the a-d to 1-8 translation.
on the code reader I use it gives the info (IE its said cyl 1 misfire) and it was infact cyl 1
I only use my SCT to upload new tunes, I have this cool bluetooth to OBD2 adapter that works with an android app that I use to monitor the car and check codes (and it gives a short description of the error code.)

Coils 1-8 = a-h with 1 being a, 2 being b, 3 being c and so on. They swich the way those codes read out like that on and off with model year, no idea why. 1-4 on passenger side with front being 1. 5-8 drivers side with front being 5. Passenger side is refered to as bank 1, drivers side is bank 2.
