got a 2006 GT want to buy jegs drag wheels, looking at 15x 8. wondering what back space to clear calipers and still put 26x10x 15 mickey Thompson slicks inside wheel wells any body done this? need help

 

Not Jegs wheels but I can illustrate what 10 x 15 7.25" BS Race Stars with 325/50/15 would look like using Steeda Sport Springs. My combination is both wider and taller than what you plan on using.




I wanted to tuck the tires in since my car now has an Air Lift performance suspension. To do this I narrowed the differential 1" per side.

 

well, I tried jegs with 4.5 and 5.5 back space and they didn't clear the calipers. the guy at jegs thinks maybe weld drag lites might work because they have much more size options any body know? must be some one out there running 15 inch slicks on a 2006 GT

 

So what is wrong with 15 x 10 or 15 x 8 Race Stars. On the 15 x 10 you need sway bar relocation brackets but I understand they are not required for the 15 x 8.

 

How much did it cost to narrow the rear end? Where did you have it done? That looks awesome.

 

Thanks Marcus. I am from Ontario, Canada and had the differential tubes narrowed and welded at a local shop, LE Chassis Engineering. The cost was $450 and I was very happy with the work done. At the same time I went with a Strange Engineering 35 spline axle and spool package with C-Clip Eliminators.

The first couple of pictures illustrate the "jig and pucks" used for welding everything square.

 

$450 seems like a good deal. Does that include labor to remove the rear end from the car or did you do that yourself? Did they also shorten the axles or did you order them already shortened to match the length of the axle tubes?

 

That was shortening a new axle housing. Your housing must be spotless for the welding. Axles were ordered from Strange Engineering shortened.



Removing and replacing the housing is not that bad a job but in my case did require another pair of younger and stronger hands.

 

I'm confused now. There's two axle housings in the picture. At first, I thought you only had the stock axle housing and you had that shortened, but you actually bought a new axle housing and had that shortened instead? The first pictures with the "jig and pucks" looked like an old axle housing being shortened though.

EDIT: Or maybe the "jig and pucks" picture was the "new" housing all along and you painted it black afterwards?

 

Probably the case. You can't weld to paint.

Looking at the pictures it looks like paint was scraped off. So may have cleaned and painted the "new" rear end, and then repainted once the work was done.
