Default SVO engine

I am going to go look at a 2.3 turbo engine tommorow, that was supposedly out of a SVO. Can anybody tell me how to make sure it's an original turbo motor?

Look at the heads. I hear they are round ports and not oval like TC are

It outta look like this...........................................

Look for the oil drain fitting tapped into the block, above the oil pan, towards the rear on the passenger side. Try to get the turbo, intercooler, VAM, computer, etc.

Update: I have found the turbo engine was out of a 85 Thunderbird, I boughtthe enginetoday for $150 with the 5 speed trans, turbo, etc. It was supposedly rebuilt then they never got it running again. It turns over fine, and the cam and lifters look good.

Stellar deal! The T5 alone is worth $150! If the turbo came with it, you've got the good one. A 60/63 T3 Garrett. I can't tell you how many cars I've bought and the owner said 'yep, it's got a rebuilt motor'. I tear into it and 90% of the time, it's bone stock and never been touched! Still a good deal though! Put it on a stand and pull the pan. You should be able to tell if it's got new bearings just by looking at the edges of the bearings. They should be white as opposed to everything else having a dark varnish stain. Look up into the bottom of the bores. If there's a fresh crosshatch pattern all the way down to the bottom, it's either been rehoned or bored, which means new rings. If the pistons look new, it's probably been bored. If they couldn't get it to run, it may be way out of time. Now's a good time to check the cam timing. There'sa good cam timing articleon NATO. Go to www.turbotbird.com and click on 'Tech Articles' then under 'Latest Additions' click on 'Cam Timing Belt Replacement and Set Up'. Good luck!
