i was just given a 1990 mustang convertible, it is having trans issues and the previous owner just wanted it gone. I tried to asses the issue myself, all the fluids are fine and it runs strong. Although its an automatic and will not shift out of first gear... although you can manually put it into second gear and it will shift. Any ideas on what may be wrong, im hoping that i wont have to replace the trans.

Is the CEL on and how does the trans fluid look colorwise?

 

No the CEL is not on ( you mean the check engine light correct? ) and the trans fluid is light brown in color.

this is a common problem w/ all aod's & 4r70w built before 1998 . the problem is the 1-2 accumulator . you will need to install updated version . read this...http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny...on/page4.shtml . this link is the home page to the 1st link.. http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html#... just about everything you need to know . if your fluid is brown then it is no good . i would follow the instructions on that site & flush the system & change the filter .
