Wow man.... 9K for a 302!!! You really need to shop around because thats WAAAAY over priced. Heres a brief description of the motor that I put together with FPS (Ford Performance Solutions)

351W Block (fully prepped)
418W Stroker
Everything Forged (including crank)
AFR 225 Race Heads
Custom Grind Cam
Main Support System
Edebrock Manifold (didnt decide on manifold yet)
Canton 7qt. Race Pan
10.5:1
JE Pistons (or ross) (didnt decide on that yet)
FPS Polished Valve Covers
Double Roller Timing Chain
Polished Timing Chain Cover, etc. etc.
Balanced, Blueprinted & Assembled.

Basically a crate motor (500+HP) except for the ignition and the carb's. I was getting that for around mid 6K (without shipping & taxes).

Yeah, you're getting hosed on those quotes.

Think of the numbers this way .........

Install engine 10hrs max @ $60/hr rate = $600
Good short block ............................... = $1,500
Good head and intake package ......... . = $2,500
what ever I'm forgetting .................... = $500

Total ................................................ = $5,100 for smoke'n new engine ready to drive

This should give you a nice forged piston engine putting out 350-400 hp

I've seen stock short blocks on the internet for as little as $500 too.
www.tbolt.net has $500 short blocks with $125 core fee.

Keep looking before you sell your car.

Thanks for all the good info, everyone. Yeah, 9 grand is a lot--and I don't think it was for a 500 hp motor. Believe me folks, I would love to build my own motor from the shortblock up. That I could afford. Only problem is, I have a small son, and simply don't have the time. I would have to pay someone else to do all of the work. But good idea, I will shop around for other prices. Also, I'm trying to stay below 300 horse, so as not to have to replace my tranny/rear any time soon. At any rate, let me look around a bit more. Thanks again.

If you want something easy and dont want a ton of power try this.

you should be able to do this your self pretty easy on a weekend
http://www.thumperoforangepark.com/

Check out his #3 option, ported heads, cam and timing chain for $900.

Should add a solid 60-80 hp and give you a fun car for less than $1000.
your bottom end is probably fine.

No problem... Just thought that I would let you know BTW, that place FPS (Ford Performance Solutions) is in Anaheim, CA. They will build anything from shortblocks to crate motors, 300-1200hp. Give them a call, they are great guys and they are cheap.
Their website is http://www.f-p-s.com

Thanks for the links folks. R.barn, that just might be the ticket. I'm going to run compression/leakdown tests first, so I'll know for sure before doing the mods. Good suggestions.[sm=smiley20.gif]

Yep, I'd find another shop to do business with.
Get Mustang and Fast Ford magazine and start looking at the ads or just start google-ing and look for engine builders.

Me and a buddy of mine did a engine rebuild. All stock though, just a freshen up. We replaced all bearings with Clevites, i think we got all bearings in the engine for about $90 from local speed shop. Then we replaced all the rings, he got them for $105 with tax. Timing chain set was $50. He got a complete engine hardware kit for about $180 from speed shop. Then a complete engine gasket set was i believe like $65 or something like that. But the only thing we had to farm out was the cam bearings, we let an engine shop do that, they charged us like $40 to do it. Oh and valve springs $90. And it took us about a week, and that was working around school and work. That was in his 87 Hatch. My dad had all the tools such as Micrometers, calipers, feeler gauges, etc. So we didnt have to rent or buy anything. But 9000 could buy you alot more than a stock rebuild, you could buy almost a completely re-done fox for that. But i think all in all we spent like $900-$1000 for the entire thing we did. And his car ran like butter when we got done. If you could work on it 2-3hrs a night you could easily do it yourself. If two 17 year old kids can. But then again, kids do complicate stuff. Well, good luck. I'd just buy a new stock short block. You can pick one up for like $900-$1400
