Default AOD Question

I'm very new to 5.0 mustang technical info so I want to try to get some questions answered.

What does AOD stand for (I know its a type of automatic transmission), but what does AOD exactly mean. I hear there are all sorts of problems with stock AODs, what are the main specific problems with AODs?

Thanks for helping!

automatic overdrive , yes

if your looking at one, stay away, they are very weak, and very expensive to rebuild.

if you have one....don't do the aod "shuffle" where you hold 2nd by pulling back into 1 and then shifting into 3rd by going back to "d"
get an oil cooler and shift kit ASAP and don't use od unless your on the freeway.

i had 2, i know they are garbage.

actually if your not beaten the hell out of the tranny they are actually fine transmissions and i will agree with the above mentioned get a shift kit and a good 3000 stall converter. those transmission are not that much to rebuild either anywhere from 500-1200 for a basic rebuild.which is average for any auto tranny rebuild
