87 and 88 had speed density not MAF. Except for California versions...after that they were all MAF. I'm sure what year but later models got air bags. The wheels also changed around 89 or 90. They didn't make T-Tops after 88. Those are all the things I'm aware of.

I am looking at an '89. Basically all i care about is that the motor, suspension, and transmission are all the same as the latest LX Coupe.

I'm 99% sure the drive train stayed the same. The only thing to consider is the air bags will add some weight and the speed density makes it harder to tune. I think the 89 is a good year...it has MAF and no air bag.

The 89 will be a good year to go after. I have a 93, and those came with different pistons (hypereutic [sp?] instead of forged) than all the other years. You have to be more careful adding boost or nitrous to the 93 motors, as the pistons aren't as strong as the forged ones.

Thanks for all your help.

Are there any other differences in the drivetrain that anybody knows about?

Well it could be seals or it could just be bad compresion/rings. You could try some stop smoke or some engine restore.
