fuel sender

i bought a new autometer gas guage for my particular year. Autometer only has one sender available. If i buy that one it will work with my guage. or do i have to have a ford sending unit. Cause the autometer is only 40.00 and the factory one is 90.00 but if i can save some money i will go that route.
